How to know if an e-mail is a scam

E-mails come in many forms, and it sometimes can be difficult to tell the difference between a genuine message and a scam. Here are some of the many indicators that the e-mail you've received is fraudulent.

Incomplete/misspelled words
One of the indications of ascam e-mail is poor spelling, grammar, or punctation. E-mails coming from professional organizations and companies are highly unlikely to contain any of these mistakes.Scam e-mails, on the other hand, are often written by individuals who may not have strong spelling or grammatical skills, or are simply writing in a rushed fashion. If you receive an e-mail that appears to be from a legitimate company, but has spelling or grammar mistakes, it is probably a scam and should be deleted.

Requires immediate action
If the e-mail makes a statement about requiring immediate action, a good practice is to call the company directly and inquire about the details in the e-mail, to determine if they did in fact send that e-mail or not. The customer service department should be able to look up your account and determine if any action is required, especially action related to the e-mail you received.

Request to enter personal information
Some e-mails are designed to capture, or steal, a user's login credentials for a particular website. These e-mails often include a request for a user to submit some sort of personal information or login credentials via e-mail to access or verify an issue with their account. If an e-mail you receive asks for any of this information, be wary as it can be a sign of a scam.

Addressed toa user name
Writers of fraudulent e-mail have varying degrees of information about the recipient, sometimes none aside from their e-mail address and user name. Legitimate companies generally start an e-mail by addressing the recipient by their full name. Many times point of a scam e-mails is to gain personal information about the user, so it may use something more generic, like "Dear Sir" or "Dear Madam."

Check the web page link
One of the most commonly used tools of scammers is a web page link. A deceptive e-mail may contain a link to a bogus website that they'll use to capture whatever you type on that web page, allow them access to your account or information. To combat this, you can check the link in your e-mail before clicking it. One way to inspect a link is to place your mouse cursor over the link, but refrain from clicking on it. At the bottom of youre-mail program or browser in the status bar, you should be able to see the actual website address that the link in the e-mail is pointing to. Inspection of the link should indicate whether or notthe like is to the companies actual website.

In any of the above cases, if you feel the e-mail you have received is a scam, do not attempt to click on any links in the e-mail. Aside from trying to send you to a fraudulent website, it may also contain spyware which could be designed to capture and steal further information from your computer after the fact.

Google Search Tips And Tricks: How To Search Like A Pro

The internet is a vast sea of information, therefore to get the most out of Google search, you must instruct the search engine to bring exactly what you want. Since Google is the largest search engine in the world, I'll share with you some tricks on how to search like a pro on Google.

1. Use of Quotation Marks and Key Phrases
When looking for something on Google, envelope the key word with quotation marks to instruct the search engine to bring all about what you searching for. For example if you type in"Reebok", search engine would bring all about Reebok and nothing else.

2. Time Range Search
If you want to know about the NFL between 2011 to 2014 for example your search would look like this NFL 2011...2014. This would instruct the search engine to bring up all about the NFL between 2011 and 2014.

3. Document Type Search
If you are looking for a particular file type say a PDF file for example you can instruct Google to look for PDF files on Technology by typing in "Filetype: PDF Technology". For word file replace PDF with docx, for PowerPoint files put in ppt, for excel type in xls.

4. Inclusive Search
If you want search engine to bring up two terms in the search, like Apple and Mac for example, just type Apple OR Mac.

5. Searching for Word Definition
You don't need to type a word on Google and start looking for dictionary definition on dictionary sites. To get a definition on Google just type "define: word" and the definition would pop up on top page

4 Useful WhatsApp Tips You Should Know

1. Backup And Restore WhatsApp Chats

WhatsApp makes automatic backups of your chats, but you can also make a manual backup. On iOS, go to: Settings > Chat Settings > Chat Backup, then tap Back Up Now.

On Android, just go into Settings > Chat settings and tap Backup conversations to create a backup. This won’t backup your media, so you’ll need to use a file manager to copy the media folders in/sdcard/WhatsApp/Media.

There’s no way to restore chats directly from WhatsApp, so if you want to restore a backup you’re going to have to uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp. When you start WhatsApp after the reinstall, you should be prompted to restore your most recent backup. Just follow the procedure and your chats should all be back.

2. Change Your WhatsApp Phone Number

If you’ve changed phone numbers but kept the same phone, you don’t need to uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp just to change numbers. There’s a setting within WhatsApp that will let you migrate your WhatsApp account to a different phone number.

Go to Settings > Account > Change number. Enter your old phone number in the top field and then your new phone number in the bottom field. Then press Done. Verify your new phone number, and all your chat history, groups and so on will be migrated to the new number.

3. Hide "Last Seen" Timestamp

By default, WhatsApp shows a "last seen" timestamp, telling other users the last time you were on WhatsApp. Some of you may want to disable this timestamp, for privacy reasons. You can disable this timestamp on both iOS and Android. If you’re an iOS user, you’re in luck, since all you need to do is go into Settings > Chat Settings > Advanced and set Last Seen Timestamp to Off. If you’re an Android user, you won’t have  access to this setting from the app itself. Instead, you’re going to have to rely on a third party app such as Hide WhatsApp Status  . The app disables your WiFi and data connection when you open WhatsApp. Once you exit the app, your WiFi and data connections are reactivated, WhatsApp will sync, and your messages will be sent.

4. Lock Your WhatsApp

Last month I wrote a post on how to lock your WhatsApp. If you missed it,  read it here.

How to easily unlock your forgotten android pattern lock

It can really be annoying when you are locked out of your android smartphone simply because you tried the wrong patterns severally. When this happens, you can no longer access anything on your smartphone but receive incoming calls. Never worry, there are a number of ways to bypass the pattern lock when you find yourself in such a situation, and I’ll explain them in details.

1. Using GMail: If the wrong pattern has been entered 5 times on an android device, you are presented with a screen that prompts you to wait for 30 secs before trying another pattern, hit Forget Pattern, and you would be prompted to input your Gmail details, and if you still can remember it, then your smartphone or Android OS driven device can be easily unlocked.

Type in your GMail credentials. If it’s entered correctly, you’ll get a prompt to draw a new pattern for your lock and Yappeeee! your android device would be unlocked.

2. Using CMD: For this method to work for you, your USB debugging must be turned on in your smartphone.

Method 1:

.*.Connect your Android devicevia USB to your computer

.*.Open Command Prompt by pressing the window key + R, then type “cmd” (without quotes) in the space provided and hit OK

.*.Type in the following codes adb shell cd /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/database ssqlite3 settings.dbupdate system set value=0 where name=’lock_pattern_autolock’;update system set value=0 where name=’lockscreen.lockedoutpermanently’;.quit

*.Reboot your android device and unlock via whatever pattern you choose.Method 2

If you tried the above pattern and it doesn’t work for you, then you have to follow the same procedure as above, but using this set of code.*.adb shell rm /data/system/gesture.key Your android device would successfully be unlocked.

If you were not able to go through this method, then the below is your last resort.

Resetting The Smart DeviceThis is the last solution on this list because most people would not love to loose whatever they had stored on their smartphones internal memory. But when you could not get any of the above stated procedures to work for you, you have to resort to this method. All you need do is hard reset your android device’s memory, this would wipe all apps including the Pattern Lock and leave your phone free from the lockout. Most Android Devices are Reset By Pressing Switch Button + Volume Key + Home Key

Follow the options and erase all data and your android device would be free from the pattern lockout.

Australia’s 4G Is The Fastest In The World, US’ Ranks Second Slowest

Users of 4G LTE in the US: Your last-gen network isn’t as fast as you think. British research firm OpenSignal, which specializes in wireless coverage mapping, has released a report which states that Australia has the fastest 4G Internet speed in the world. While the US is second slowest, the Philippines was named the slowest.

According to the report, which is based on the state of LTE coverage and speeds around the world, all LTE networks don’t perform comparably, contrary towhat most of the people anticipate. The data showed that there is immense variation in 4G performance of networks in different countries, with some service providers showing overall dwindling 4G download speeds in 2013. For example, in the US, average 4G download speeds have dropped from 9.6 Mbps in the second half of 2012 to 6.5 Mbps in 2013.The report also noted that the U.S. networks uniformly performed poorly, and no particular operator was responsible for the drop in the nation’s average speeds. Congested service could be the outcome of spectrum allocations, staggered network rollouts, equipment upgrades, additional customers, and more.

Australia was at the top of the list with greatly improved 4G speeds of 24.5Mbps, up 42 percent from 17.3Mbps. Brazil, Italy and Hong Kong were also noted for good average 4G speeds ranging from 21 Mbps to 22 Mbps.
